Zumba® is a dance workout, so wear clothes you can jump, turn and sweat in. You don't need anything special for your first class. This guide goes piece by piece, from your top down to your shoes.
Tops and sports bras
Pick a top that stays in place when you lift your arms and doesn't get heavy when you sweat. Tanks, crop tops and loose tees all work. Underneath, wear a supportive sports bra. You'll be jumping and moving fast, so this is the one piece not to skip.
Tip: Bright colors and bold prints are a big part of Zumba® style. Wear whatever makes you want to move.

Leggings, pants and shorts
Leggings stretch with every step and stay out of your way, which is why you'll see so many of them in class. Joggers and loose dance pants work if you like more room, and shorts help in a hot studio.
Tip: Try a squat and a quick twist at home before class. If the waistband slips, a high-waisted style will stay up better.

Zumba® shoes
Shoes are worth getting right. Running shoes have thick, grippy soles made for moving forward, which makes turning and pivoting harder on a dance floor. Dance sneakers are made for side steps and spins, so they're easier on your knees and ankles.
Not sure which pair to get? Our guide to the best shoes for Zumba® compares them side by side.
Tip: Keep your dance sneakers for class. Wearing them outside picks up grit that makes the soles grab the floor.
What to bring
Bring a water bottle and a small towel. A headband, bandana or hair tie keeps hair out of your face, and good socks keep your feet comfortable for the whole class.
Your outfit checklist
- Dance sneakers and a sports bra you're comfortable in
- Leggings, pants or shorts you can squat and turn in
- A light top that stays in place when you move
- Water, a towel and a layer for after class
Common questions
What should I wear to my first Zumba® class?
Workout clothes you can move in and a pair of light sneakers. A sports bra, leggings or shorts, and a breathable top are all you need.
Should I wear leggings or shorts?
Either one works. Leggings are the most common choice, and shorts are cooler in a hot room. Pick whichever you can squat and turn in without pulling them back into place.
Do I need Zumba® shoes?
Not for your first class. If you keep going, dance sneakers make turns easier on your knees and ankles. Here's how to choose a pair.
